Sinkhole

Digitally transferred and edited colourSuper8 with sound, 15minutes. 2024.

There was a plan to build a cinema in the cliffs – it might have been here. Sinkhole is a poetic response to the archive and oral histories of Tyneside Cinema, an independent cinema in north-east England which has faced many waves of crisis. Through vignettes, Sinkhole meditates on grand visions and being near to collapse.

Filmed on Kodak Super8 Film. Processed and scanned by Gauge Film Ltd and On8Mil.Commissioned by Tyneside Cinema with funding from Arts Council England.

Sinkhole is a fiction that draws on stories found in the archive and oral histories of Tyneside Cinema. It samples language from statements the cinema has used to define itself.
